Satinal obtained EPD Declaration for both STRATO® Glass Interlayers and STRATO® Solar PV Encapsulants as great sustainble films in the industry.

Satinal, an Italian company featuring a multi-brand archiecture encompassing a range of products and machinery for glass industry worldwide, has officially published their Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for STRATO® Glass Interlayers and STRATO® Solar PV Encapsulants products, and finally declares itself the most sustainable glass interlayers manufacturer on the market. This prestigious declaration, validated by Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, is a testament to our ongoing efforts to provide the global construction and solar industries with products that are not only high-performing but also environmentally responsible.

The EPD holds global validity, providing cradle-to-gate potential environmental indicators results used in Europe and North America for a declared unit of 1 sqm.

This means enhanced decision-making capabilities, allowing for the specification of materials with a clear understanding of their environmental footprint, ultimately contributing to more sustainable building designs and projects.

These results were achieved through a European supply chain that Satinal developed over more than ten years in the industry, coupled with strong relationships forged with international chemical companies and suppliers.

Understanding the environmental impact: our EPD and HPD data

The EPD also provides crucial data on the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of our products. We are proud to share that the cradle-to-gate GWP results for 0.38 mm interlayer is equal to 0.953E0 kg CO₂ eq./m² .

These figures demonstrate our commitment to minimizing environmental impact from the very beginning of our production process, through transportation, and within our manufacturing operations. Indeed this exclusive result remarks STRATO® most sustainable interlayer in the market.

Contributing to LEED: a holistic approach

In essence, our HPD and verified EPD are not just documents; they are powerful tools that directly translates into significant contributions towards LEED certification

By specifying our products, customers are choosing products that are rigorously assessed for their environmental and health performance.

The STRATO® product family: innovation and application dedicated to architects, designers, and contractors

Our certified products, STRATO® Glass Interlayers and STRATO® Solar PV Encapsulants, are at the heart of what we do. Manufactured with precision and care in our HQ in Erba - Italy, they are designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern architectural and solar applications.

STRATO® Glass Interlayers: elevating design possibilities

What are STRATO® Glass Interlayers? STRATO® are EVA films used in laminated architectural safety glass. EVA films must be laminated between two or more panes of glass under heat and pressure. This process creates laminated safety glass, a product renowned for its exceptional strength, safety, and versatility. Unlike ordinary glass, laminated glass with STRATO® interlayers holds together even when shattered, significantly reducing the risk of injury from flying fragments. EVA cross-linking chemical composition allows the internal molecules to generate tridimensional links, thus guaranteeing an additional degree of protection for all architectural elements exposed even to exceptional conditions, such as high temperatures, high humidity and extreme weather conditions. STRATO® also offers full protection against UV radiation, preventing interiors from fading and acoustic insulation.

Key features and benefits:

  • Safety and security: our interlayers provide superior resistance to impact, making laminated glass an ideal choice for applications where human safety is crucial, such as balustrades, overhead glazing, and public access areas. In the event of breakage, glass fragments adhere to the interlayer, maintaining the integrity of the pane
  • Sound insulation: STRATO® interlayers have excellent sound properties, effectively reducing noise transmission through glass. This makes them invaluable for buildings in urban environments, near airports, or wherever acoustic comfort is desired
  • UV protection: our interlayers filter out a significant percentage of harmful UV radiation, protecting interior furnishings, artwork, and occupants from fading and damage, while allowing visible light to pass through
  • Design flexibility: STRATO® EVA interlayers are available in various colours, transparencies, offering design freedom
  • Structural integrity: laminated glass can contribute to the structural integrity of a building, offering enhanced resistance
  • Durability and longevity: our interlayers are engineered for long-term performance, resisting delamination, yellowing and maintaining optical clarity even in challenging environmental conditions

Typical applications:

  • Curtain walls and facades: providing safety, thermal performance, and aesthetic appeal for high-rise buildings and contemporary structures
  • Skylights and overhead glazing: ensuring safety and protection from falling debris
  • Balustrades and railings: offering robust safety barriers with clear views
  • Windows and doors: enhancing security, sound insulation, and UV protection for residential and commercial properties
  • Glass floors and stairs: creating visually striking and structurally sound horizontal surfaces
  • Interior partitions: dividing spaces while maintaining transparency, sound control, and safety
  • Security glazing: for applications requiring enhanced resistance against vandalism, forced entry, or ballistic impact

STRATO® Solar PV Encapsulants: empowering renewable energy solutions

What are STRATO® Solar PV Encapsulants? STRATO® Solar PV Encapsulants are specialized polymer films designed to encapsulate and protect the delicate photovoltaic (PV) cells within solar modules. These films play a critical role in the long-term performance and durability of solar panels by providing environmental sealing, electrical insulation, and adhesion between the various layers of the module.

Key features and benefits:

  • High transparency and UV resistance: our encapsulants offer excellent light transmittance to maximize the efficiency of PV cells, while also providing superior resistance to UV degradation, preventing yellowing and maintaining performance over the module's lifespan
  • Adhesion and bonding: they ensure strong adhesion between the glass, solar cells, and backsheet, preventing delamination and ensuring the structural integrity of the solar module
  • Moisture barrier: they act as an effective barrier against PID (Potential-Induced Degradation), extending life of the panels

Typical applications for facade engineers and architects:

  • Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV): integrating solar modules seamlessly into building facades, roofs, and skylights, combining aesthetic design with energy generation
  • Solar facades: creating energy-producing building envelopes that contribute to a building's energy independence
  • Standard photovoltaic modules: ensuring the long-term reliability and efficiency of traditional solar panels used in ground-mounted arrays and rooftop installations

Looking ahead: our commitment to sustainability

Publishing our HPD and EPD is not the end culmination of our sustainability journey; it is the first step that reaffirms our ongoing commitment. At Satinal, we are continually exploring new ways to innovate, reduce our environmental impact, and contribute to a more sustainable future for the construction and solar industries.

Satinal’s EPD is an important stepping stone. We are already looking ahead to further enhance these results. Our dedication to sustainability will drive continuous improvement, and we plan to collaborate closely with our international chemical partners and raw material suppliers. By working together, we aim to innovate and refine our processes, ensuring that future iterations of STRATO® products set even higher benchmarks.

Indeed, we believe that transparency and verifiable data are crucial for driving positive change, and our EPD is a clear demonstration of this belief.
