A smart retrofit can be just as transformative as a new investment—discover how AGC Interpane and Glaston modernized a tempering line to boost efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability for the future.

Retrofit instead of a new investment

With a strategic investment in modernizing existing equipment, AGC Interpane is sending a clear signal for future viability, sustainability and economic efficiency at its Hildesheim site. Instead of investing in a new production line, the company opted for a comprehensive retrofit of a tempering furnace dating back to 2001, bringing the system to a whole new technological level.

A Forward-Looking strategic decision

The starting point was a fundamental decision: the control system for the existing HTF ProE tempering furnace was no longer supported. The options included scrapping the line, upgrading the control system to maintain the status quo, or implementing a comprehensive modernization with extended capabilities.

Given the overall good condition of the equipment and the need to continue processing large glass formats efficiently, the company chose an extensive retrofit. In addition to a modern control system, a new heating system and bottom convection were integrated.

Technological leap and Increased efficiency

The conversion began in early 2026 and included not only the new control system but also the replacement of key wear parts. The result: a system that is not only future-proof in terms of support but also demonstrates significant improvements in efficiency and performance.

  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Increased capacity
  • Expanded capabilities for coated glass
  • Tempering of all temperable coatings, even in large formats

At the same time, the operation has been significantly simplified, noticeably reducing the workload for operators.

More flexibility and new market opportunities

The modernized system enables the Hildesheim site to respond flexibly to production requirements and to support other plants during bottlenecks. At the same time, it opens new sales opportunities through an expanded product portfolio.

David Bernhardt, a member of the management team, emphasizes the importance of the investment: “With this project, we are sending a clear signal to our customers and employees: the Hildesheim site will continue to be strengthened and expanded. The increased flexibility and new technological capabilities are key building blocks for our future development.”

Sustainability in practice

While sustainability is often used as a marketing tool in many areas, AGC Interpane demonstrates tangible results in this project: extending the service life of an existing system while reducing energy consumption makes a significant contribution to conserving resources.

The concept is also economically compelling: compared with a new investment, the retrofit offers clear advantages in terms of total cost of ownership and an attractive payback period.

Glaston, the plant partner, also sees such projects as an important contribution to the sustainable development of the glass industry. “An upgrade of this kind is a great compliment to the longevity of our equipment and the quality of our technology. It combines sustainability and innovation in one project and satisfied customers confirm that we are on the right track,” explains Riku Färm, VP Solutions & Product Management.
