Eastman breaks ground on major expansion at its Ghent facility to boost interlayer production and sustainability.

Eastman Chemical Company today marked a significant milestone with a ground-breaking ceremony at its manufacturing facility in Ghent, Belgium, signaling the commencement of a major investment to upgrade and expand its extrusion capabilities for the production of interlayers with a commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible manufacturing practices. This initiative, first announced in November 2024, underscores Eastman’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for its advanced Automotive Premium products.

As the automotive industry evolves with trends such as enhanced connectivity, self-driving vehicles, and electric mobility, Eastman recognizes the increased market demand for its Saflex™ polyvinyl butyral (PVB) products. The planned enhancements at the Ghent South manufacturing site, which boasts over 50 years of experience in manufacturing Saflex interlayers, will not only bolster Eastman’s capacity to supply these innovative products but will also strategically position the facility for future growth across both automotive and architectural segments.

“This investment underscores Eastman’s dedication to the interlayers business and our commitment to innovation in technology that aligns with current and future market demands,” said Bob Theeten, Site manager Ghent. “By expanding our capabilities in Ghent, we aim to optimize our regional network, enhance service differentiation, and create a robust talent pipeline.” Said Sabine Ketsman, Division president Films.

The project is set to create approximately 50 new jobs, providing valuable opportunities for the local workforce. With an investment totaling several tens of millions of dollars, Eastman is reinforcing its long-term commitment to the Ghent facility and the broader EMEA region.

The expansion project is slated for completion in the second half of 2026, further solidifying Eastman’s role as a leader in the interlayers market and contributing to the economic growth of the community.
