Architects, engineers, and building professionals are invited to join an AIA-accredited webinar on Designing Glazing for Wind-Borne Debris Protection, scheduled for August 13, 2025, at 12:00 PM ET. The course, presented by glazing expert Vaughn Schauss, will provide attendees with valuable insights into designing systems that protect buildings and occupants in hurricane-prone coastal regions.

Wind-borne debris protection is a critical building code requirement in many coastal areas. Impact-resistant glazing, as part of a complete window or door system, helps prevent catastrophic building failures, interior damage, and business disruption during severe storms. The webinar will review industry standards, including ASTM E1886 and ASTM E1996, and outline testing requirements based on wind zone classifications and protection levels.

The session will explore the role of laminated glass interlayers—both PVB and ionoplast—in achieving optimal performance. Ionoplast interlayers, with their superior stiffness, tear resistance, and open-edge durability, will be discussed in detail, along with wet- and dry-glazed system options and their impact on labor and material costs. Participants will also learn how hurricane glazing systems can meet energy performance codes and provide added security benefits.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the building codes and standards governing glazing in wind-borne debris regions.
  • Identify testing requirements for missile impact and pressure cycling.
  • Learn the benefits of impact systems for essential facilities.
  • Recognize the performance attributes of different laminated glass interlayers.
  • Explore additional considerations, including energy performance, intrusion resistance, bomb blast mitigation, and tornado protection.

Registration is now open for this essential educational session. Attendees will earn 1.0 LU/HSW AIA credit upon completion.
