Laminated glass windows in trains might have prevented a fifth of the deaths at seven of Britain's recent rail crashes, an industry expert has said.

Peter Randall, speaking on behalf of Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate, was giving evidence at an inquest into the seven deaths in the 2004 Ufton Nervet tragedy in Berkshire.

Mr Randall said research into rail safety had found that toughened laminated glass would reduce the instances of people being hurled to their deaths through windows.
