ST. LOUIS—April 25, 2008—Shwinco Industries, a coastal manufacturer of custom vinyl windows and doors for residential and heavy commercial use buildings, has teamed up with Solutia Inc. (NYSE:SOI) to offer code-approved hurricane protection products made with KeepSafe® Maximum laminated glass.

Strategically headquartered on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Shwinco conducts virtually all of its business in coastal zones, where there is a large demand for high performance impact resistant glass. Windows and doors constructed with Solutia’s KeepSafe Maximum interlayer provide an effective means of helping to protect homes during a hurricane where the ability of glazing products to resist wind-borne debris can often mean the difference between a home surviving a storm intact and the need to rebuild.

“Because of our location, we understand the unique demands of coastal living, which makes our partnership with Solutia a perfect fit,” says Craig Shipp Sr., president & CEO at Shwinco Industries. “The architects and builders we work with demand a superior product offering and our window and doors made with Solutia’s KeepSafe Max interlayer are able to withstand the wind-forces generated by the strongest Category Five Hurricanes.”

Windows and doors made with KeepSafe Maximum glass are certified, code-approved, and have passed Florida’s tough building code requirements. Manufactured by permanently bonding a tough interlayer between two pieces of glass under heat and pressure, laminated glass in a properly designed and tested framing system, can be an important element in protecting the building envelope. If the glass is impacted, even by debris blown at hurricane-force wind speeds, it may crack, however, the KeepSafe Maximum interlayer helps keep the glazing in the framing system helping to prevent debris from penetrating the opening and entering the structure.

Shwinco Industries specializes in the residential and heavy commercial use market along the Gulf and Eastern Seaboard. “Our Shwinco H.C. series are the first vinyl windows rated for heavy commercial use which allow design possibilities and far greater energy efficiency than ever before possible,” notes Shipp.

Other benefits offered by KeepSafe Maximum glass include security, sound reduction and solar protection. “Although hurricane protection was the primary reason behind switching to impact resistant laminated glass windows made with KeepSafe Maximum, our customers have also come to appreciate its other benefits,” says Shipp. Aesthetically, impact resistant glass with KeepSafe Maximum alleviates the need for unsightly shutter frames and provides passive home protection 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And because it is so difficult to penetrate, would-be thieves are deterred. The KeepSafe Maximum plastic interlayer in the glass also offers a significant acoustic benefit, allowing homeowners to have a quiet atmosphere inside regardless of outdoor noises.
