ASTM International’s glass and glass products committee (C14) is developing a proposed standard that will provide quality approval guidelines on decorative enamels on flat glass. The new specification (WK88132) builds on an existing standard (C1048) that covers enamels on spandrel glass, now including heat-tempered and flat glass applications.
According to ASTM member Michael Saroka, the proposed standard is a necessary addition to C1048, which is currently used as a broad guideline for all enamel-on-glass applications.
“Because there was no set standard for decorative products, C1048, specifically Condition B, was applied to all decorative coated glass,” says Saroka, chief product officer with Goldray Glass. “The viewing conditions and tolerances were not appropriate for all products, but the industry had nothing else to fall back on. Now they will.”
