Glass for Europe welcomes a European Commission’s delegation to AGC Glass Europe’s plant in Moustier

The visits offered Commission officials a first-hand view of flat glass manufacturing and an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

The visit was joined by representatives from four different European Commission’s Directorates-general in order to discuss the realities of manufacturing flat glass in Europe and on the conditions needed for the sector to remain competitive while progressing towards lower-carbon production. The visit was also an opportunity for an open exchange between the European Commission and the flat glass industry on several key initiatives.

During the discussions, Glass for Europe Chair Davide Cappellino highlighted the scale of the challenges facing the industry as it works to reduce its carbon emissions while maintaining production in Europe. He reminded the European Commission that European flat glass manufacturers are facing a difficult operating environment, marked by high energy costs, weak demand, growing international competition and significant investment needs.

Mr Cappellino insisted on the importance of energy for flat glass production, as furnaces operate continuously and require substantial amounts of energy. At the same time, reducing the carbon intensity of production requires major technological investments and favourable conditions for their deployment.

The discussion also looked at opportunities presented by upcoming European policy initiatives. The Industrial Accelerator Act, for example, could help create stronger markets for European-made high performance glazing products. Similarly, the Circular Economy Act can contribute to strengthening the circularity of materials and supporting the industry in the reduction of its carbon emissions.
