Hosted as part of the FTI's 2020 World Congress Workshop Series, this educational workshop will focus on recent advances in technology in the field of structural glass, as well as architectural design trends in the design of all glass facades.

Using real design examples, the workshop will offer participants an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest advances in this rapidly changing field.

This is an AIA-registered course. Attendees will receive 2 LU|HSW credits.

 

Workshop Objectives

  1. Discuss recent advances in technology in the fields of structural glass systems and glass fabrication.
  2. Discuss architectural design trends and modern facade design best practices.
  3. Discuss the prevalent use of jumbo glass in architectural applications.
  4. Review project applications that illustrate current design practices and construction techniques.

RICHARD KAIRE, PE, SE | SENTECH ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMS, LLC

Richard holds a BS in Civil Engineering with a structural focus from Texas A&M University. He has over 6 years of façade engineering experience and 8 total years as an engineering professional. While at Sentech, he has engineered progressively complex structural glass facades while also improving the engineering department standards and processes. He specializes in seismic façade design, non-linear finite element contact analysis, and staged analysis. Richard is a registered PE in over 20 states and a registered SE in Illinois.

 

NED S. KIRSCHBAUM FAIA, CCCA, LEED AP BD+C | FENTRESS ARCHITECTS

Mr. Kirschbaum’s career spans more than 40 years during which time he has distinguished himself as an expert in Project Team Leadership, Project Execution, High-Performance Building Envelope Design, Building Materials Specification, and Sustainable Design. He has served as Project Director for all 8 of Fentress Architects’ high-rise buildings in the Arabian Gulf. Ned was the founding Chairman of the Building Enclosure Council—Colorado and served as an Advisory Group member on the National AIA Building Science Knowledge Community. As Technical Design Director at Fentress Architect, Ned is responsible for the development of the firm’s cutting-edge facades.

 

MICHAEL LUDVIK, PE | M. LUDVIK ENGINEERING, PC

Michael is a special structures and glass engineer. In 2010, he founded M.Ludvik Engineering in Brooklyn. His portfolio features structural glass and kinetic work in the US and globally, including the SkySlide in LA, the MoMA Expansion, The Broad Collection, the Queens Museum, and over 80 iFly indoor skydiving wind tunnels. Architect collaborators include Diller Scofidio + Renfro, OMA, Grimshaw and Gensler.

 

EDWARD N. PECK, FAIA, LEED AP | EDWARD PECK DESIGN

Edward M Peck is an advocate for high-performance architecture, an educator of informed collaboration and a pioneer of innovative materials.

With more than 20 years of experience in the design and construction industry, Edward has become a leader in innovative and performance driven architecture. His professional history is diverse; he has practiced as an architect, façade engineer and served as the design director for a leading specialty ETFE contractor. From these positions he has gained valuable knowledge from design and engineering to product development, manufacturing and construction.
