The winners of the 2026 Glass Magazine Awards have been announced, with two landmark projects featuring NorthGlass Super Glass—Australia’s Glasshouse Theatre and Shanghai Greenhouse—taking the top two spots in the Project of the Year category.
With a history spanning more than 75 years, Glass Magazine is one of the most influential publications covering the glass and architectural metals industries. Officially published by the National Glass Association (NGA) in the United States, it is widely regarded as an authoritative voice in the glass and façade industry.
This year’s judging placed particular emphasis on the innovative use of glass in contemporary architecture. The judges noted that the winning projects “demonstrate the limitless possibilities of glass in building envelopes,” while also showcasing the designers’ creative vision, technical expertise, and use of advanced glass products. They emphasized that it is precisely this unwavering commitment to architectural craftsmanship that continues to drive the creation of better-built environments.
Glasshouse Theatre: Project of the Year and Best Engineering Achievement
Located in Brisbane, Australia, Glasshouse Theatre received two major honors: Project of the Year and Best Engineering Achievement.
Designed jointly by Blight Rayner Architecture and Snøhetta, the theatre draws inspiration from the Brisbane River, creating a wave-like transparent glass façade. As the glass manufacturer for the project, NorthGlass supplied 217 custom curved insulating glass units, each approximately 7.5 meters high with a 1-meter radius. The units feature double-silver coatings, reverse-curved geometry, and laminated insulating glass construction.
Glasshouse Theatre was named Project of the Year for representing one of the most ambitious and refined applications of structural glass in contemporary architecture.
“One of its most striking features is the rippling transparent glass façade, which transforms extraordinarily complex engineering challenges into a visual effect that appears effortless and fluid,” said Austin Zajicheck, a Glass Magazine Awards judge and Marketing Manager at Linetec – Apogee Architectural Metals.
“What makes this project stand out is not only its technical complexity, but also the way that complexity has been elegantly translated into a simple architectural language, allowing the building to merge with its surroundings. The façade is no longer merely an enclosure; it becomes an expression of the building’s identity, blurring the boundaries between structure, skin, and public space,” he added.
Shanghai Greenhouse: Project of the Year Runner-Up and More
Shanghai Greenhouse was named Project of the Year Runner-Up and also received the Architects’ Choice and Best Green Project honors.
The project features NorthGlass-manufactured reverse-curved glass, with glass panels reaching 5 meters in height and having a curvature radius of approximately 2 meters. At the top of the structure, a circular glass roof measuring nearly 3 meters in diameter brings abundant natural light into the building while further strengthening its connection with nature.
“Shanghai Greenhouse was highly praised for its seamless integration of advanced glass technology, ingenious structural design, and outstanding environmental performance,” said Dan Hart, an Architects’ Choice Awards judge and Executive Director of Parkhill.
“The project redefines the role of glass as both an enclosure and an environmental regulator. Its linear and curved laminated glass systems, combined with a large circular skylight and a slender tension-supported roof, maximize the use of natural light while minimizing structural weight. Crucially, the design challenges convention by using simulation-driven single glazing to support plant growth and improve energy efficiency, complemented by passive climate strategies.”
“I chose the botanical garden as the project site for several reasons. The exceptional transparency of the glass creates a visually light and open quality that complements the garden environment,” said Stephenson. “The transformation of the building is a remarkable piece of craftsmanship. The façade is expressive, almost curtain-like, while the transparent enclosure simultaneously provides shelter and openness.”
