Şişecam to contribute to the circularity of electric vehicles with innovative glass solutions.

As part of the ZEvRA project, Şişecam is developing an innovative solar roof glass solution for the project´s circular car prototype. The specially engineered glass can generate electricity to support the vehicle's battery system, enhancing both energy efficiency and sustainability of electric vehicles.

Şişecam, one of 28 partners in the "Zero Emission Electric Vehicles Enabled by Harmonized Circularity" (ZEvRA) project, is developing specialized glass solutions aligned with the European Union's goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2035. Coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute and including globally renowned automotive brands, the project launched in early 2024 and will run until the end of 2026.

The partners are currently in the realization phase, working on a circular car prototype. Şişecam will produce the solar roof glass for this prototype, which can actively generate power to supplement a vehicle's battery. This innovative solution aims to minimize the use of natural resources and chemicals while improving vehicle performance and reducing the carbon footprint throughout the product lifecycle.

With this solar glass technology, Şişecam demonstrates how automotive glazing can evolve from a passive component to an active contributor to vehicle efficiency and environmental protection.

The prototype vehicle is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026. Şişecam's contribution will directly advance the sustainability goals of electric vehicles through high-value, low-carbon automotive glass solutions.

About the ZEvRA Project

The ZEvRA project is funded under the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Program. It aims to improve the circular economy approach for electric light-duty vehicles and create a clean, competitive, and sustainable automotive future. The project seeks to establish a common circularity methodology across Europe, contributing zero-emission solutions throughout the entire value chain—from production to end-of-life recycling.
