Pilkington to pay $2 million settlement

Pilkington PLC, the world's biggest maker of car windshields, whose North American headquarters are in Toledo, will pay $2 million to settle a lawsuit accusing it of contaminating an Illinois town's water supply five months after a jury cleared the company at trial.

Pilkington will pay $1.65 million to the residents of the northern Illinois town of Naplate and an additional $350,000 to ensure a clean water supply for the city, according to a settlement filed May 4 in federal court here.The agreement will end post-trial motions seeking a new trial and the possibility of an appeal.

Pilkington was accused of contaminating the water and land with arsenic, which is used in polishing and grinding glass.
