But across the glazing and wider home improvement sectors, that mindset is beginning to shift.
As homeowners become more environmentally conscious and expectations around sustainability continue to rise, installers are increasingly judged not just on the quality of the installation itself, but on how responsibly projects are managed from start to finish.
That includes what happens to old frames, glass and materials once they leave site.
According to FENSA, responsible recycling is no longer simply about compliance or environmental obligations. Increasingly, it is becoming part of how installers build trust, strengthen reputation and differentiate themselves in a competitive market.
“Responsible recycling shouldn’t cost installers a penny, and that’s our mission, to enable that for everybody,” explains Sam Davies, Technical Manager at FENSA.
The organisation says feedback from installers already using its Recycling Scheme suggests the commercial benefits are becoming just as important as the operational ones.
“The installers that are using the scheme have fed back to us and told us that when they’ve been engaging with their consumers, when they’ve told them about the use of a responsible recycling scheme that they are involved with through FENSA, it’s established a more trusting relationship with them,” says Sam. “It’s helped them win their work.”
That shift reflects broader changes in consumer behaviour.
Homeowners are becoming more informed, more research-led and more interested in the environmental impact of the products and services they buy. Questions around sustainability, recycling and responsible disposal are becoming increasingly common during the sales process.
For installers, being able to demonstrate that waste materials are handled responsibly can provide reassurance at a point where customers are deciding who to trust with work on their home.
“It’s not just the cost saving that installers need to consider when they’re looking at the free recycling scheme,” Sam explains. “Yes, it’s very important, but you’re also upgrading your professionalism, enhancing the trust that you have with those consumers, and acting more responsibly.”
Importantly, FENSA’s approach is designed to remove the complexity that has historically prevented some businesses from accessing compliant recycling routes.
For smaller installers especially, arranging compliant waste collections has often been seen as expensive, time consuming or difficult to organise consistently across different regions.
FENSA says its Recycling Scheme has been built specifically to simplify that process.
“Setting yourself up on the recycling scheme is really, really simple,” says Sam.
Installers can access the scheme directly through the FENSA portal, where company details are automatically pre-populated through their existing registration information.
“All you need to do is log into the portal, go onto the installer benefits page, click on the recycling button,” Sam explains. “That will feed you through into a link which pre-renders all of your contact information based on your company registration.”
Once submitted, referrals are directed to an approved waste collection partner operating within the installer’s area.
“That referral then goes to the waste collector that is assigned to your area,” Sam continues. “They make contact with you, they set up a collection.”
The system is also structured to support long-term operational efficiency.
“From there, you can actually set up regular collections with that recycling partner, so you don’t need to refer every single one through the FENSA portal,” says Sam. “We already have that information, we have that referral. You can then set up your own partnership with that company.”
As sustainability expectations continue to evolve across the construction and home improvement sectors, FENSA believes installers who can clearly demonstrate responsible practices will increasingly stand out.
In a market where trust, transparency and professionalism are becoming central to winning work, responsible recycling is no longer simply a back-end process, it is becoming part of the customer experience itself.
