Registration is now open for the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) Insulating Glass (IG) Fabricators Workshop, which will be held October 27-29 at the Intertek testing facility in Fridley, MN.

The workshop, led by industry experts, will feature a balanced mix of classroom education along with hands-on experience to discover best practices for cleaning, cutting and handling glass, desiccants, sealants, gas fill, frost point and more. The first day will conclude with a reception and dinner. Register now for this three-day hands-on training before the October 9 deadline.

“There is no better way to learn about the most important aspects of fabricating and testing IG units than this hands-on training,” said Kaydeen Laird, FGIA Education Manager. “Led by IG industry experts, this three-day program covers cleaning, cutting and handling glass, desiccants, sealants, gas fill, frost point and much more.”

Workshop Topics

Over the course of the three-day event, training will be broken into classroom instruction and hands-on application. The classroom training will cover safety, the history of insulating glass, a review of basic IG components and how to visually inspect for volatile fog.

Several lab stations will be held throughout, the first of which will cover various spacers including well fabricated samples and samples with deliberate manufacturing issues. In addition, methods for testing desiccant drying capacity will be demonstrated. Experts will explain how to correctly use the GasGlass device to verify gas fill levels and will introduce participants to the iTig sensor for measurement of gas and humidity. A sealants station will teach participants how to complete the butterfly test and application, proper gunning of Polyisobutylene (PIB) and how to properly mix and gun sealants safely. The glass cutting and washing station will give a demonstration of score quality covering cutting wheel wear, angle and pressure.

On the last day, participants will utilize knowledge from their training to determine failure modes starting from the basic visual inspection to destructive analysis of the unit.
