The British glass industry and its supply chain was celebrated as part of a parliamentary debate that took place on July 14.

Secured by St Helens North MP Conor McGinn, the debate covered British Glass’ net zero strategy, the vast history of both flat and container glass manufacturing in the UK, the best practice for glass recycling and the future of the glass sector.

Minister for Energy, Clean Growth and Climate Change Greg Hands MP responded to the points raised by Mr McGinn MP praising the importance of the glass sector, reassuring that government want recycling to be as easy as possible and continuing to engage with EIUG on the current energy crisis.

British Glass CEO Dave Dalton said:

“During the International Year of Glass, it is great to see our industry taking centre stage in the House of Commons and we thank the Rt Hon Mr McGinn for securing the debate on behalf of our fantastic industry.

“Like other energy intensive industries, glass is not without its existing difficulties with energy, gas and carbon leakage but there is much for our industry to celebrate from our pioneering net zero strategy to our extensive commitment to closed loop recycling.

“We are glad that this debate offered us the opportunity to both raise the challenges currently facing our industry and gives us all an opportunity to celebrate our successes in the presence of MPs, including the Minister for Energy, Clean Growth and Climate Change.”
