Innovations that shape the glass industry: glass technology live was a highlight at glasstec 2024. We look back on the impressive exhibits and pioneering developments with Prof Dr Ulrich Knaack.

Glass is one of the most fascinating materials in the construction and technology sector – transparent, flexible and subject to constant “reframing”. This is exactly what the special show glass technology live at glasstec demonstrates: a platform where science and the glass industry come together to showcase innovative ideas and pioneering developments. This is where the latest research findings meet real-life applications and inspire the industry.

Almost six months after glasstec 2024, we take another look back. Because the technologies and concepts presented there have an impact far beyond the trade fair itself providing impetus for the future of the glass industry as a whole. This is particularly evident in the topic of circularity: the idea of designing glass products and processes sustainably and using resources efficiently was the focus of many exhibits and many discussions. In this interview, Prof Dr Ulrich Knaack, expert in façade construction at TU Darmstadt and ‘Design of Construction’ at TU Delft as well as head of glass technology live, talks about key trends, the development of the special show and his own personal highlights.

The highlights: Let’s hear from Prof Dr Ulrich Knaack

What was the response to the innovations at glasstec 2024? Are there any interesting developments?

Thank you for the question – yes, the event was very worthwhile and we saw some really new and exciting innovations! As was already apparent during the event, the topic of circularity is becoming a key aspect in our industry. But I was also very impressed by traditional topics like energy generation, constructive glass construction, new technologies and innovative design.

To what extent do the current global challenges, such as the circular economy or decarbonisation, impact the focus and choice of topics for the exhibits at glass technology live?

The topic of circularity already established itself as a trendsetter at the last two events – so I expect to see exciting new influences once again at glass technology live 2026! It’s particularly impressive to see how an initial seed has now grown into a cross-industry topic with very different approaches to solving the CO₂ problem.

Which exhibits were among your personal highlights – and why?

As before, the machine for disassembling IGUs (IG2Pieces), but also design solutions like the folded glass structure (Glacier Glass Pavilion) and the thin glass sculpture (Curved Glass Pavilion) – or our glass shell (Frameless) – were exciting projects! Actually, it’s almost unfair to have to choose, because almost all of the innovations presented have advanced the industry. It’s always worthwhile and always impressive!
