CONTRAFLAM integrity and insulation glass, which is helping John Watson Joinery secure new fire glass contracts.

Integrity and insulation (EI) fire-resistant glass CONTRAFLAM® from GLASSOLUTIONS is helping leading door and window fabricator and installer John Watson Joinery gain a competitive edge in the delivery of the most innovative fire protection solutions for today’s thermally-superior and safe buildings. The joinery company, which has a strong track record in the housing and commercial markets stretching back almost 40 years, introduced CONTRAFLAM 12 months ago to supplement its already well-established range of high performance fire-rated doors and windows. And, it has already proved a crucial differentiator as the demand for fire glazing which offers both insulation and integrity grows.

Eddie Watson, Operations Director of John Watson Joinery said, “We’ve worked with GLASSOLUTIONS – or Solaglas as it was until recently – for many years and know first-hand the quality of their products and service. CONTRAFLAM has added an important new dimension to our portfolio as it allows us to meet the requirement of fire-ratings ranging from 30 to 120 minutes in combination with other properties, such as thermal insulation and acoustic insulation. And in safety critical locations too thanks to it being a toughened product.

“Importantly, CONTRAFLAM reflects the premium quality of our doorsets and windows – the excellent performance our customers have come to expect from our timber, composite and steel products is matched very well. But supply chain reliability is also crucial to the success of our business too and that’s why we value suppliers like GLASSOLUTIONS who we know will give us the technical back-up and lead times we need to maintain our edge in a highly competitive market.”

Amongst the projects that John Watson Joinery has completed recently using CONTRAFLAM is a care home complex in Cambridgeshire which involved the installation of 120 windows. This required fire-ratings of EI60 for Ash and hardwood timber windows which was achieved using 25mm EI CONTRAFLAM. 14mm CONTRAFLAM Lite EW60 was also used.

CONTRAFLAM is the only UK-manufactured integrity and insulation (EI) glass which means competitive lead times and outstanding product quality. It is manufactured at the GLASSOLUTIONS site in Coventry following a £2m investment in capability in 2010.

CONTRAFLAM provides fire-resistance with the benefit of real flexibility in terms of its ability to be combined with other products that offer additional properties. These include high thermal insulation in combination with Planitherm low-E glass, giving centre pane values from 1.1 W/m2K in double glazing and 0.5 W/m2K in triple glazing, as well as high light transmission with no haze/tint. Plus acoustic insulation and security in combination with laminated glass; solar control; vision control and decorative functions.

The benefits of using CONTRAFLAM extend way beyond its fire-protection and the flexibility to combine it with other glass products. It is suitable for numerous applications both internally and externally, such as screens and partitions, doors, floors, overhead glazing and curtain walling. This is fully supported with extensive certification for steel and aluminium systems, as well as timber. The benefits are summarised in a new sales leaflet which is now available, and which can be downloaded from here: 12 Reasons to Choose CONTRAFLAM.
