“Smart Glass”, Insulating Heat in Summer and Absorbing Heat in Winter, a Miracle in Glass Industry

Date: 22 June 2012

Jin Pingshi, a researcher of Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and specially retained expert for national “Thousand Talents Program”, and the team led by him has developed a smart energy-saving glass coating film.

The glass coating film can set different critical temperature according to the climate variables in different regions of China, and can insulate external heat in summer and absorb heat in winter, which achieves the effect of “intelligently energy-saving”.

Jin Pingshi said that “smart glass” means the optical properties of glass allow bidirectional adjustment as required: when temperature exceeds a given value, the glass insulates heat outside, and when temperature is below the given value, the glass absorbs heat outside. After years of research and development, he developed the energy-saving coating film that can achieve automatic dimming by applying vanadium dioxide as the phase change material.

It is reported that the achievement will be applied in industrial production, and will become commercially available soon. At that time, residents in each province and city could buy the coating film with various critical temperatures. While sticking the coating film on the window glass and auto glass, it shall achieve the effect that being warm in winter and cool in summer under the precondition of reducing a large amount of energy consumption.
