Glass curtain wall fabricated with SOLARBAN 72 STARPHIRE glass - PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) announced that SOLARBAN(R) 72 STARPHIRE(R) triple-silver-coated, solar control, low-e glass has been installed on the new Sandcrawler building in Singapore, which will serve as the regional headquarters for building owner Lucasfilm Singapore, as well as The Walt Disney Company (Southeast Asia) and ESPN Asia Pacific.  The state-of-the-art building – a glass-and-metal rendition of the Sandcrawler vehicle featured in the movie “Star Wars: A New Hope” – is clad in a high-performance glass curtain wall featuring Solarban 72 Starphire glass fabricated by AVIC Sanxin, Shenzhen, China, a member of the International PPG CFP CERTIFIED FABRICATOR PROGRAM(TM) network, and installed by Permasteelisa, Singapore.Photography by Bill Lyons PhotographyThe design of the Sandcrawler building, which officially opened in January, has been recognized with major architectural awards including: Leading European Architects Awards 2012—Finalist, Best Future Building of the Year The Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Awards 2011—Best New Global Design MIPIM Asia Awards 2011: Gold Winner, Best Futura Project Cityscape Awards for Architecture in Emerging Markets 2011—Future Projects and Commercial ProjectsDue in part to its energy-efficient glass façade, the 242,000-square-foot office tower has received Gold Plus Green Mark certification from the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore.Solarban 72 Starphire glass was specified for the Sandcrawler building because it combines exceptional transparency and an ultra-neutral aesthetic with outstanding solar control performance, enabling it to maximize daylighting and reduce air-conditioning use, and thereby reduce overall energy costs.

In a standard 1-inch insulating glass unit (IGU), Solarban 72 Starphire glass has visible light transmittance (VLT) of 71 percent and a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.30, producing a light-to-solar-gain (LSG) ratio of 2.38.
