The world famous Lincoln Center, home to Juilliard School of performing arts and Alice Tully Hall, in New York City, has been given a makeover worth singing about thanks to Pilkington Planar™ glazing.

More than 10,000ft2 of the world’s leading structural glass system has been installed in the refurbishment. The refurbishment cost approximately $200million and includes a number of new glass walls incorporating Pilkington Planar™, each needing their own unique detailed engineering and design scheme to ensure the utmost safety and aesthetic appeal. The focal point of the refurbishment includes a vertical structural glass cable wall utilising Pilkington Planar™ integral fittings, specially designed tension cables, and patch fittings.

Located in such a prominent area of New York, constructed in view of thousands of passers by and with students taking part in lessons on a daily basis, it was essential that the installation was highly co-ordinated, contained and that the final result was aesthetically pleasing. Here Pilkington Planar™ was top of the class. Pilkington Planar™ incorporating Pilkington Optifloat™ helps to create highly attractive working environments with more light and a greater feeling of space. The Pilkington Planar™ system has given architects the freedom to create the stunning glass facades and canopies that are such a feature of modern landscapes.

Mike Awad, project manager from W&W Glass, said: “The project had a complicated geometry with an intricate structural steel system. W&W Glass and Pilkington were brought in early in the project programme to assist in the design, not only to help meet the demanding aesthetic needs of the architecture team, but to also aid the structural engineers by maximising performance abilities, accommodating large varying building movements and loading the building in very specific ways.”

The near 100,000 sq ft expansion and renovation restores some of the building’s lost architectural characteristics whilst positioning this dance, drama and music area for the future. Features of the renovation include an entrance lobby and box office, a black box theatre, an orchestra rehearsing space and recording studio, jazz studios, a large dance rehearsal studio, a library expansion, an archive for rare music manuscripts, plus several smaller studios, rehearsal rooms, classrooms, administrative offices, lounges and teaching studios. Many of those areas are located in the more than 38,000 sq ft expansion of the original Juilliard building into an open triangular site toward Broadway. Two interior courtyards also were enclosed and have become useable interior. The Juilliard School has 800+ full-time undergraduate and graduate college students in dance, drama and music, as well as 900 adult evening students each semester. In addition, approximately 350 music students age 8 – 18 study at Juilliard on Saturdays. The school presents more than 700 performances each school year in its own five halls, as well as elsewhere throughout New York City. Almost all of them are free to the public.

With a proven track record in the most demanding applications, the Pilkington Planar™ system enables architects to create a complete glass envelope for buildings, with facades on any plane.
