GIMAV and MICE are joining forces to strengthen opportunities for Italian glass technology in the growing Southeast Asian market.

Our Observatory, constantly committed to monitoring market developments, is increasingly leading us to acknowledge one clear fact. Or rather, two. Among the key perspectives that can help us define the current situation, the dominant aspects are, on the one hand, the fluidity (and instability) of geopolitical balances and, on the other, the extreme vitality of some new markets. Africa, for example (which we have already discussed, also organising dedicated missions such as the one to Morocco), but also certain areas of Asia.

Let us take, for example, Southeast Asia, which continues to establish itself as one of the most dynamic and strategic markets for the development of the manufacturing industry and glass processing technologies.

Against this backdrop of constant expansion, GIMAV has recently signed a new strategic partnership with MICE (MMI Asia), organiser of Glasstech Asia & Fenestration Asia (GAFA) 2026. The agreement aims to consolidate the presence of Italian technology in the ASEAN region, offering member companies privileged access to a business development platform of primary importance for the region.

The event, now in its 22nd edition for Glasstech Asia and its 9th for Fenestration Asia, will take place from 10 to 12 November 2026 at MITEC (Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre) in Kuala Lumpur, within BAU’s prestigious global exhibition network and with the support of the Singapore Glass Association.

A Strongly Technology- and Machinery-Oriented Industrial Profile

And here we come to what interests us most: namely, the aspects we have focused on in order to assess the actual relevance of the event. An analysis of the event’s structure speaks clearly: Glasstech Asia is not merely a showcase for architecture and façade design, but a trade fair with a strong industrial and manufacturing profile. The product sectors represented cover the entire technological supply chain: Manufacturing, Processing & Finishing, Engineering, Hardware and Machinery, through to Technology & Digital Solutions.

In terms of target audience and visitors, the event shows a significant overlap with Italian manufacturing excellence in flat glass, accessories and processing technologies. The professional categories expected to attend include manufacturers and processors of basic and processed glass, glass refiners, manufacturers of processing and finishing plants and machinery, manufacturers of measuring and control instruments, as well as specialists in tooling and spare parts and mechanical engineering consultants.

For the 2026 edition, the organisers expect more than 5,000 professional visitors, 300 exhibitors, 50 internationally renowned speakers and delegations from 50 countries and regions.

Qualified Buyers and Business Matching at the Heart of the Agreement

One of the most strategically valuable aspects of the partnership lies in the professional matching and hospitality programmes organised for the event. The event will feature 300 selected and guided international hosted buyers, alongside dedicated Business Matching formats, International Pavilions and targeted networking events.

This structure turns participation in the trade fair into an opportunity for direct commercial positioning: beyond the exhibition dimension, GAFA 2026 represents an effective business development tool for tapping into the growing demand in Southeast Asia and developing wide-ranging synergies, while at the same time strengthening the Association’s international promotional activities and network of contacts ahead of upcoming industry events, starting with VITRUM 2027.

Malaysia’s Great Boom: An Opportunity for the Glass Industry

In short, the choice of Kuala Lumpur as the venue for the 2026 edition reflects a precise market-positioning strategy. Malaysia is experiencing a period of strong economic and industrial acceleration. And the figures confirm this: the construction sector recorded growth of +20.2% in 2024, exceeding 158 billion Malaysian ringgit (MYR) in completed works. On the investment front, the country attracted MYR 378.5 billion in 2024 (approximately USD 83.4 billion), supported by a significant inflow of foreign capital amounting to MYR 170.4 billion.

Driving the entire glass supply chain are major infrastructure projects — from public transport (MRT/LRT) to healthcare and educational construction — together with an increasingly significant green transition. With more than 671 projects already certified under the Green Building Index (GBI), covering a total of more than 300 million square feet, the Malaysian and Southeast Asian market is expressing strong demand for low-E glass, insulating glass units (IGUs), solar-control glass, tempered and laminated safety glass, as well as integrated and certified solutions for high-energy-performance façades.

This represents a vast field of opportunities for those who decide to approach this market with the right tools. The new partnership signed by GIMAV aims to be precisely one of those tools. Italian companies in the sector will have a preferential route to integrate into this rapidly evolving value chain, reaffirming the role of Made in Italy technology as a benchmark for glass quality and sustainability worldwide.
