With the launch of the first’laser product line, Bystronic glass and Jenoptik Automatisierungstechnik GmbH announced the start of their cooperation at the glasstec 2008.

We are glad to be able to bundle our competencies in the production of thin film solar modules from now on”, Richard Jakob, CEO of the Bystronic glass Group, and Ulf Feistel General Manager of the Jenoptik Automatisierungstechnik GmbH agreed.

The new machine combines the processes of laser edge deletion and laser glass cutting, Thermal Laser Separation (TLS) in the production of thin film photovoltaic modules. Customers can expect substantial benefits from the cooperation of the two companies with global activities. “Our customers now can install a machine on a small footprint area which deletes glass edges without dust or damage at a hitherto unknown quality“, Richard Jakob says and adds: „The laser glass cutting process then produces microcrack free edges with increased bending strength.“ Subsequent processes, such as cleaning or edge processing, are not necessary. “As we offer two functionalities in a single machine, production costs can be cut substantially”, Ulf Feistel explains.

Profit from the wealth of experience

The cooperating companies present themselves as partners for individual solutions as well as for overall concepts in photo¬voltaics. Both, the Bystronic glass Group and also Jenoptik Automatisierungstechnik GmbH, have experience in this field. The Swiss-German supplier of system solutions for the manu¬facture of architectural and automotive glass is known as supplier of machines for the encapsulation of thin film modules by Thermo Plastic Spacer®, short TPS®. The Jena-based specialist for photonic and mechatronic technologies has built a name for the installation of machines for patterning thin film modules. Both cooperation partners are confident that the synergy they create can also be applied to future projects.
