Corning Lotus™ XT Glass Selected for Tianma’s LTPS Line

Date: 22 May 2013

Tianma panels featuring Corning’s newest glass composition enable high-resolution display devices - Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) and Tianma Micro-Electronics Group today jointly announced Tianma’s selection of Corning Lotus™ XT Glass for its line of low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) panels.       Tianma and Corning will display these panels in their respective booths at the Society for Information Display’s Display Week, an industry trade show in Vancouver, British Columbia, May 21 - 23.

Tianma’s booths are #206 and #221, and Corning’s booth is #801.

Corning introduced Lotus XT Glass, a second-generation composition, last week. A highly dimensionally stable glass substrate, it enables efficient manufacturing of high-performance displays.

Tianma, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of liquid crystal displays (LCD) in small- to medium-size, thin-film transistor (TFT) modules, produces its LTPS product line using high-temperature manufacturing processes, which place stringent requirements on glass.

Lotus XT Glass performs exceptionally well in LTPS manufacturing environments. It retains its shape and surface quality during customer processing due to its outstanding thermal stability. Lotus XT Glass also features superior total pitch variation – up to 75 percent better than the company’s first-generation product, Corning Lotus™ Glass – supporting higher yields. And due to its intrinsic dimensional stability, it enables high-resolution displays that offer increased pixels per inch (ppi).

Tianma chose Lotus XT Glass for its LTPS backplanes because of the advanced properties of the glass. The company’s LTPS line is located in Xiamen, China, and has a capacity of 30,000 TFT modules, and more than 30,000 color-filter modules per month. It is the first Gen 5.5 LTPS line in China.

Tianma creates LTPS panels for its customers who subsequently use them in high-resolution smart phones and tablets that feature 350 - 450 ppi. Currently, Tianma’s panels are positioned to enable 4- to 6-inch smartphones and 7- to 10-inch tablets.

“We decided on Lotus XT Glass for two main reasons: its heightened total-pitch variation performance and Corning’s long history of glass expertise and quality,” said Wang Lei, executive vice president of Tianma Xiamen. “After testing the glass in our rigorous manufacturing cycles, it performed remarkably well and allowed tighter design rules and precise component alignment. For us, Lotus XT Glass was an ideal solution for our cutting-edge LTPS line.”

“We are very pleased that Tianma selected Lotus XT Glass,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning High Performance Displays. “Corning developed this glass to enable panel makers to not only improve yields but also extend their design limits, which Tianma is certainly doing by focusing on high-pixel-count smartphones and tablets.”

Tianma LTPS panels are projected to hit the market in June.
