CORNING, N.Y., September 23, 2008 – Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) and Lightwave, a unit of business-to-business media and information company PennWell Corporation, today announced the winner of the fifth annual FTTXcellence Award.

Jim Hansen of EMBARQ in Overland Park, Kan., is the recipient of the award, which honors an individual for his or her contributions to the deployment of optical access networks in North America.

Jim Hansen, senior vice president of Network Services at EMBARQ, was praised for his contributions toward the advancement of fiber to the home (FTTH), specifically with regard to its adoption, deployment and marketplace education. Under Hansen’s leadership, EMBARQ’s network services organization embraced FTTH as the deployment method for new service addresses and selective over-build locations. EMBARQ’s adoption of FTTH is a direct result of the efforts and unique approach established by Hansen’s organization, deploying FTTH solutions in a way that maximizes value for both EMBARQ and its customers. In addition, Hansen continues to coordinate information exchanges through meetings and summits with other service providers as a forum to share common FTTH experiences, concerns and potential areas of partnership.

The nomination committee selected Hansen from a pool of highly qualified candidates across several industry segments, all of whom were nominated by their peers for the award. He received the award today during a ceremony at the FTTH Conference in Nashville, Tenn. At the ceremony, a donation was made in his name to One Economy Corporation, a national non-profit organization created to maximize the potential of technology to help low-income families build assets and raise their standard of living.

"Jim Hansen is a visionary and knowledgeable advocate for the advantages that FTTx networks will continue to bring consumers and service providers," said Clark Kinlin, president and CEO of Corning Cable Systems. "We congratulate Jim Hansen on this honor."

"FTTx technology promises to provide a wealth of new, high-speed services to homes and businesses across North America," said Stephen Hardy, editorial director and associate publisher of Lightwave. "We at Lightwave are pleased to join Corning in recognizing Jim Hansen, who has been a leader in bringing these benefits to consumers and other end users."

"It is an honor to represent the men and women at EMBARQ who plan and build the network to give our customers the ability to receive the latest in communications services," said Hansen. "EMBARQ prides itself on innovation that makes sense and delivers value to our customers. This award is testimony to that effort."
