AGC selected the research themes for “the Eighth AGC Research Collaboration Program (Publicly-solicited Industry-Academia Joint Study Prarogm)”

Date: 1 June 2012

Tokyo, May 31, 2012—AGC (Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.; Head Office: Tokyo; President & CEO: Kazuhiko Ishimura) introduced in 2004 a joint study program (AGC Research Collaboration Program) to collaborate with bodies such as universities or public research institutions, which are solicited publicly based on the Company’s own needs and seeds.

In 2011, AGC made public solicitation with 4 topics related to the fields of glass, fluorochemicals, environment and energy, and selected one theme among 35 entries as joint research themes related to “Research on various materials with novel features by controlling the interface of the constituent materials” for the Eighth AGC Research Collaboration Program. In addition, we chose four themes as research support themes from among those which were not selected as joint research themes.

1. Joint Research Theme

“Development of novel composite materials via electrostatic adsorption assembly technique” by Ph. D. Hiroyuki Muto, Associate Professor of Dep. Electrical and Electronic Information Engineering of Toyohashi University of Technology.

To support the above-mentioned joint research theme, AGC will provide the research materials, as well as research funding of about 20 million yen annually for up to three years.

2. Research Support Themes

In addition to the above, AGC selected research support themes among those which were not chosen as a joint research theme. The details of research support and the names of organizations, which the relevant applicants belong to, are as follows:

  • Provision of research fund (1 million to 2 million yen per project as scholarship endowment; research materials may be provided separately)                                                                                             Yamagata University, Tohoku University, Osaka University, Kobe University

AGC will leverage the outcome of joint research internally and continuously create new businesses and products. This program will continue in 2012 for the purposes of extensively promoting the creation of new value through collaboration between industry and academia.
