AGC: Oslo’s Opera House, An Iceberg In The Norwegian Fjord

Date: 1 September 2009

The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo is the winner of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van der Rohe* Award 2009 Architect: SnøhettaGlass: AGC - Stopray Safir  Inaugurated several months ago, this fantastic building is intended to make opera, ballet and symphonic music more accessible to members of the public. “We wanted to create open, inviting architecture”, explained Snøhetta Project Manager Simon Ewings. “The key elements of the design are its marble-clad roof rising out of the fjord, which allows visitors to walk all over the building, and the building’s glazed sides, which connect the people inside and outside the building”, he added.  Snøhetta chose Stopray Safir for this very special project for a number of reasons.

Firstly, its aesthetic appeal links the land with the sea and opens up the space inside and outside the building for visitors walking around the whole site. Secondly, this glass combines high insulation with a great solar factor, perfect for the Norwegian climate.
