Viracon, the nation’s leading single-source glass fabricator, is going greener. While its innovative glass coatings and assemblies are known for making significant contributions to buildings’ sustainability, the company is making further strides to reduce its own environmental impact by redesigning its sample boxes.

The new design of the containers incorporates 100% recyclable water-bases inks and 60% post-consumer waste. In addition, viewing instructions are printed directly onto the inside cover vs. on a separate insert.

“We send out between 15,000 and 18,000 samples boxes per year for our 12-by-12 samples,” says Christine Shaffer, marketing manager at Viracon. “That’s nearly 55,000 glass samples. In the past, the samples were packed with a non-recyclable material. However, as a company, we’re doing everything we can to minimize our environmental footprint, so we decided to get rid of the foam material and are now using either cardboard or a recycled polyethylene material.”

Viracon’s samples will now come in custom cardboard boxes. All box materials, including the glass samples are now recyclable.

“This means we’ll be keeping thousands of foam pieces out of landfills around the country,” says Shaffer. “It was a small change for us, but we’re hoping it will make a big difference.”
