PITTSBURGH, Dec. 20, 2012 – PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) announced it has won a Building Design + Construction (BD+C) magazine Marketing Leadership Award for a print advertisement promoting the environmental sustainability of PPG glass and coatings.

The advertisement, titled “Unexpected Angle,” highlights the application of DURANAR(R) VARI-COOL(R) coatings and the installation of ATLANTICA(R) glass in insulating glass units with SOLARBAN(R) 60 glass on the Appaloosa Branch Library in Scottsdale, Ariz.Duranar VARI-Cool coatings, which were used on the library’s metal siding, feature infrared-reflective pigments that deflect solar heat from buildings to reduce air-conditioning costs and urban heat-island effect. The coatings also are formulated with special pigments that refract light when it strikes their surfaces, causing the coatings to change color along with changes in the angle from which they are viewed.

Atlantica glass with Solarban 60 glass has a striking emerald-green tint that complements the color of the library’s metal siding, but it also transmits 54 percent of the sun’s light into the building while deflecting more than 70 percent of the sun’s heat energy. As a result, the library uses less energy for lighting and air conditioning, and it provides a more natural environment for reading, learning and socializing.

The use of these PPG products and its other energy-saving features helped earn the Appaloosa Branch Library several sustainable building awards as well as LEED(R) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The “Unexpected Angle” advertisement is part of a comprehensive corporate advertising campaign that promotes PPG’s ability to provide customers with sustainable and innovative products, services and technologies that protect and beautify surfaces on buildings, boats, airplanes and automobiles, as well as computers, televisions, appliances, cabinets, furniture, sporting goods and more.

The BD+C Marketing Leadership Awards recognize print, digital and integrated advertising campaigns that demonstrate excellence in creativity, message and effectiveness. Winners were chosen by an independent panel of architects and building industry professionals.
