Date: 26 May 2014

NSG Group announces that it has successfully developed a new composition of thin glass, that can be chemically tempered for the protective cover glass applications for tablets, PCs and other electronic devices.

By utilizing our technological advantage in thin float glass manufacturing, we successfully developed a new composition, when chemically tempered, which has a higher tempered toughness than ordinary soda-lime glass with high clarity at a low cost.We plan to commence mass production by the end of this calendar year.In addition to our existing soda-lime cover glass, we will add this new glass composition to our line-up and expand our business in the cover glass market.

In-line with the growth of the touch panel market, the demand for cover glass is expected to continue to increase globally*1. The applications for touch panels are expanding and include not only smart phones but also tablets, PCs and industrial equipment.

Customer needs in the cover glass market are diversified. In the high and medium end, the mainstream material is chemical tempering glass of high specifications with a premium price. However, Customers are always looking for glass at a lower cost but has high quality.

*1 The growth of cover glass market is expected to be approximately 18 percent p.a.(compound annual growthrate in square meter for CY2013-CY2018).

Under the Long-term Strategic Vision and Medium-term Plan, announced on 15 May 2014, NSG Group is aiming to be a “VA Glass Company” by increasingly focusing on value-added (VA) products.
