Finished Project: Structural Glass Box with Glass Beams

Date: 31 July 2013

Titlark - IQ Glass designed, detailed and installed this structural glass box to a large detached home in ascot.

The residential property has fantastic rear views over the neighbouring Sunningdale Golf Club and makes the most of it with the large structural glass conservatory and glazed balcony to the centre rear of the house. The glass extension was made using single glazed toughened laminate glass panels to all sides. The structural glass roof is supported using laminated glass beams supporting the full span of the large roof.

Above the glass roof, aluminium blades were used as a Louvre system to shade the internal space during high sun and reduce the amount of overheating inside due to solar gain. Using external blind or shading systems is much preferable to using internal methods as is stops the solar heat gain before it enters the space.

The Glass Beams were specified as standard toughened glass to create a slight pigment to the glass elements which wouldn’t be noticeable if using ‘low iron’ structural glass elements and glass beams.

At the base of the structural glass box are a set of bi-parting bi-fold doors. These single glazed sliding folding doors have a frameless vertical section with a mat aluminium base and head. They slide away from each other at the centre to open up the whole access opening to the large gardens.

To the balcony at the centre to the property IQ installed a frameless balustrade as the safety barrier and a glass canopy to shelter the external space. The glass canopy was supported using a laminated glass beam beneath to ensure minimal shading to the balcony and also maximise the light transmission into the internal space. Internally this fully glazed structural glass construction will not impede on the views of the sprawling golf course.

The owner of the property is so happy with the end results that he is currently in the process of having a matching structural glass extension to the opposite side of the property.
