The first bar to open at London’s iconic Battersea Power Station redevelopment features Crittall steel windows whose appearance chimes perfectly with this former industrial landscape.

The Darwin & Wallace bar, No.29 Power Station West, completed this July, is the result of a two and a half year project by East Sussex-based Box9 Design.

The firm, which is a Restaurant and Bar Design Award winner, had the task of establishing the tone of the first commercial opening at the Thames side Power Station site. Inspiration was sought from the era of the original 1930s power station, say the designers. Elegant Art Deco was blended with industrial power chic.

The interior of the new bar/restaurant, which is on two floors, features bespoke furniture and lighting modelled on original designs referencing the period from the 1920s through to the 1950s. Into this design palette Crittall Corporate MW40 windows and doors with robust steel glazing bars were installed as the natural choice.

“We picked Crittall as we wanted an Art Deco industrial look to reflect the power station. We also needed to comply with BREEAM so required a double glazed specification,” says Lou Davies, director of Box9 Design.

Crittall MW40 fenestration can accept up to 30mm thick glazing providing excellent acoustic as well as thermal performance while the slender profile characteristic of all the company’s products maximises daylight.
