Bystronic glass speed’cut: focus on customer benefit

Date: 5 July 2011

Dynamic float glass cutting with utmost precisionBystronic glass underlines its decade-long expertise in glass cutting with the introduction of the speed’cut float glass cutting table onto the market.

Thanks to its modular concept, the speed’cut is highly versatile and for example can be used for the cutting of architectural glass during the preprocessing of glass for photovoltaic modules, during the primitive cutting for automotive glass or during the processing of special glasses.

"The excellent and synonymously named speed’cut provides speed: with a speed of up to 300 metres per minute and an acceleration of up to six metres per square second. The machine guarantees a quick processing of cutting plans", says Lorenz Buri, Head of Sales for Architectural Glass and Solar Technology at the Bystronic glass Technology Centre Bystronic Maschinen AG. In doing so, the deployed measuring system offers the ultimate precision on the desired dimensions, therefore reducing potential grinding tolerances to a minimum. The cutting bridge is driven by modern linear technology that Bystronic glass has made available to the mass market for the first time. This replaces the previous common combination of racks and sprockets and significantly reduces maintenance outlay. Furthermore, the speed’cut works significantly quieter when in production than other respectively older cutting tables thanks to this drive.

Reduce weight and save energy

"The speed’cut with the construction of its cutting bridge offers enormous energy saving potential thanks to the honeycomb structure. The bridge is significantly lighter than comparable elements in conventional structures and is extremely stable", explains Lorenz Buri. The low weight of the cutting bridge leads to a 20 % reduction in energy use for acceleration and braking. The actual core of each and every cutting table runs along the bridge: the cutting head. This is individually manufactured by Bystronic glass and is processed by hand for each machine. Also the tried and trusted edge deletion unit from previous cutting table models have been taken into consideration on the speed’cut which has been adjusted to meet the requirements for ever-harder glass coatings. In combination with the new control, the operator obtains comprehensive process information. Multiple cutting oil circuits for different glasses as well as an automatic tool changer make operational manual interventions almost unnecessary.

Configurations in accordance with customer desires

Individually, the cutting table is a great solution in combination with manual glass storage or during the cutting of special glasses. "It is not only the newest float glass cutting machine generation which supports the name speed'cut, it is also the opportunity to configure a complete cutting solution that individually adapts to the customer’s requirements", explains the Head of Sales. For instance, the three-part combination consisting of speed’cut, loader and a manual breaking table enables the user to set up and expand their cutting solution step by step – without having to dispense of comfort and performance. The modular concept also enables a combination with the first’lamicut cutting table for laminated glass. As a result, the customer can separate the entire glass plate including coated glass and special glasses on a single cutting solution in accordance with the requirements. Furthermore, the X beams can be automatically broken on the integrated separation bridge for laminated glass downstream of the speed’cut.

Ensured quality thanks to state-of-the-art software

The control connected to the network via the Bystronic glass ByFlow software significantly simplifies the work preparation: on one hand, various cutting plans can be effortlessly uploaded; whilst on the other hand, production data concerning cut glass plates, information regarding the wear of cutting wheels and the operating state of the unit as well as cutting parameters and statistic information can be downloaded. Traceability at a later date is guaranteed as the speed’cut saves all data concerning the cut glasses including their origin. In combination with the ByStore storage management software, the user also obtains online information concerning the content of the glass warehouse complete with details concerning the glass amount, glass dimensions and the batch numbers of the present raw formats. This data is automatically exchanged with the directly connected PPS or ERP systems. The glass quality can be monitored in each phase of the value creation chain with the integration of visual inspection systems. ByLine ensures the online tracking of the individual glasses: the system consistently transfers the saved information onto the respective following process beginning with the cutting of the raw glass right through to the end of production.

"The speed’cut is excellent in terms of economy, flexibility and reliability and is characterised by a low operating expense", summarises Lorenz Buri. "In doing so, our customers profit from our longstanding experience." Since 1964, Bystronic glass has been active in the development and production of technically-leading systems for fully automatic cutting, breaking, grinding, drilling and handling of flat glass.
