Asahi Glass Fine Techno, a Taiwanese subsidiary of Japan-based Asahi Glass, expects its fifth glass furnace to begin operations earlier than expected to meet demand from TFT LCD makers, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times.

The company expects to begin equipment installation at the furnace, located in Yunlin County, Taiwan, in February and start operations in the second quarter of 2004, earlier than the originally expected September 2004, the paper quoted the company as saying.It expects TFT LCD panel supply to fall short of demand in the third quarter of this year and predicts Taiwan may surpass South Korea to become the world’s largest TFT LCD supplier in the same quarter, the paper added.The new furnace will add four million square meters to Asahi’s current 10-million-square-meter annual capacity.Asahi Glass Fine Techno, a Taiwanese subsidiary of Japan-based Asahi Glass, expects its fifth glass furnace to begin operations earlier than expected to meet demand from TFT LCD makers, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times.
