Date: 10 June 2013

Lightweight, flexible fluorochemical product contributes to appeal of Recife’s newly built Arena Pernambuco    AGC, a world-leading manufacturer of glass, chemicals and high-tech materials, announced today that its high-performance fluoropolymer film “Fluon®ETFE Film” has been used in the exterior façade of the 46,000-capacity Arena Pernambuco.Located in Recife, Brazil, the football stadium is one of the venues of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

Arena Pernambuco will also host fixtures of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013, including Spain vs. Uruguay and Japan vs. Italy on June 16 and 19 local time, respectively.

Approximately 25,000 square meters of AGC’s 0.25 mm-thick Fluon®ETFE Film is used across Arena Pernambuco’s entire exterior façade. The film’s lightweight and flexible qualities have contributed to the realization of the stadium’s rounded, creatively designed appearance. The film also allows a considerable amount of light to pass through it, enabling nighttime illumination effects to amplify the visual experience of fans watching from around the world. In addition, Fluon®ETFE Film is highly durable enabling long-term use, while being exceptionally resistant to soiling.

The adoption of the film, which is already used in Munich’s Allianz Stadium and other world class sporting and exposition venues, will add new appeal to the 2014 FIFA World Cup™.

“In addition to our Fluon®ETFE Film, we are also contracted to provide glass roofs for players’ benches for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup™,” said Kazuhiko Ishimura, President & CEO of Asahi Glass, Co., Ltd. “Meanwhile, we are currently building our first South American glass manufacturing facility in Brazil, scheduled to begin operating later this year. Ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, we will engage in further technological developments to help bring excitement to this global sporting celebration.”
