Touch of Glass at Museum Exhibition

Date: 14 May 2012

A POPULAR North East museum is showcasing the work of fledgling glass and ceramic artists this week.Dry Run, the annual exhibition of University of Sunderland second year BA Glass and Ceramics students, now in its 15th year, is being staged at Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead, until Friday (May 11).

The show introduces the works of 21 emerging UK and international artists for the first time and is always well received by the public.

Even though most of the participants are at the beginning of their careers, the pieces show a high level of professionalism. The diverse range of ideas and concepts are based on their ability to use glass and ceramics as a material in service of original artistic expression and a high standard of craft execution.

The exhibition presents the ideal opportunity for the students to show their work in a professional and contemporary cultural environment.

The Glass and Ceramics Department at the University of Sunderland has an important position among schools teaching glass in the UK and Europe. It is the largest department in UK with an extraordinarily high level of equipment, including one of the largest kilns in the world for casting glass and advanced water-jet cutting technology.

Throughout its 30-year history, staff, BA, MA, and PhD students, as well as visiting artists from across the world, have focused upon the development of glass and ceramics as an art form.

This has positioned the University of Sunderland as one of the most significant providers of glass and ceramics education, training and research in the UK.
