Gregory M. Sottile, Ph.D., Research Frontiers' Director of Market Development, will give a presentation entitled "Integrating Smart Glass Technology for Lifestyle Enhancement and Energy Savings" at CEDIA Expo 2010 on September 25, 2010 at 10AM at the Atlanta World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA.

Hosted by the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association, CEDIA Expo 2010 is the premier tradeshow for new technologies, training, and networking in the residential electronic systems industry. In 2009, more than 20,000 industry professionals attended the event, which featured over 400 exhibitors.

More information about the show, to be held September 22-26, is available from the event website.

CEDIA is an international trade association of companies that specialize in planning and installing electronic systems for the home. These systems include home networking, home automation and communication systems, media rooms, single or multi-room entertainment systems, and integrated whole-house subsystems providing lighting control, security, and HVAC systems.

Part of a curriculum developed by CEDIA University, Greg Sottile's presentation will focus on how smart glass advances sustainability ideals including energy savings, occupant comfort, and safety and security. He also will discuss integration of smart glass into homes using various control systems and framing materials, and offer ideas on how to create a smart glass showroom or design center.

Greg Sottile's presentation comes at a time of heightened interest in SPD-Smart(TM) light-control technology, particularly for home theaters and multi-media environments where the ability to instantly regulate the tint of windows to any desired shading level is imperative. Several recently announced SPD-Smart architectural installations highlight this interest. In June at Research Frontiers' Annual Meeting, licensee Innovative Glass Corp. discussed projects it is involved with including a showroom for a high-end audio/video integrator, and an upcoming high-profile project specifying over 40 SPD-Smart polycarbonate panels. This new project specifies SPD-SmartGlass not only for functional uses of energy efficiency, view preservation and easy maintenance, but also to create a multimedia experience for visitors to this project and help unify the building structure with the nature that surrounds it. The list of recent project activity shared at the Annual Meeting by Innovative Glass is available here.

SPD-Smart windows, doors, skylights and interior partitions transform conventional home theaters and multi-media environments into optimally responsive home and building automation systems. These products are sleek in their profile and powerful in their function. They can eliminate the need for bulky blackout shades and cumbersome mechanical shades, and because of their ability to block more than 99.5% of light, they minimize light leakage into and out of these environments. Able to block more than 99% of harmful UV, they also help protect interior furnishings and equipment. All of these functions are easily integrated into manual and automated control systems for optimal performance and enjoyment in real-time.

Research Frontiers also applauds the work of licensee SmartGlass International which recently announced supplying a large area of solar control SPD-SmartGlass to the set of "Daybreak," the new breakfast anchor program from ITV, the U.K.'s biggest commercial television network. With its floor-to-ceiling windows, the new London studio of Daybreak offers an exceptional panoramic view of the city skyline and beyond. SmartGlass International was selected to design and install a solar control glazing system that would reduce the negative effects of direct sunlight, including excessive glare and heat, into the studio.

The press release issued by SmartGlass International regarding this project states: "SPD-SmartGlass offered the perfect solution and was installed in approximately 100 window panes. The glass facade can now be automatically dimmed from clear to dark controlling glare and solar heat gain while protecting the studio inhabitants from the damaging effects of UV." The complete press release is available here.
