Pittsburgh Glass Works Introduces First Full Car-Set of Lightweight Glazing Technology on the Ford GT Supercar

Date: 18 December 2015

Pittsburgh Glass Works LLC (PGW) proudly announces the introduction of a full vehicle complement of lightweight glazing technologies for the Ford GT Supercar.

The package represents a unique application of ultra-lightweight glazing solutions using Aluminosilicate and Soda-Lime laminated hybrid glass constructions, as well as thin, lightweight tempered solutions.PGW was chosen by Ford to be the Tier I supplier for the GT after more than a year of advanced development efforts that included the installation of unique capabilities to fabricate Aluminosilicate and Soda-Lime laminated hybrid constructions at our Berea, Ky. manufacturing facility. The windshield application will be the first of its kind in the automotive OEM production market. The introduction of this unique technology is able to reduce the weight of the windshield by more than 30 percent compared to the standard windshield construction. With advantages in weight, strength and optics, PGW believes these new products will further the expansion of hybrid laminate and traditional thin solutions as light weighting continues to be an industry priority.

PGW continues to develop lightweight glazing solutions using a vast array of compositions and technologies to fulfill the needs of all segments of the automotive market. Combining PGW’s unique solar control technology with lightweight glazing can provide customers with a highly efficient glazing system that is not only lightweight, but can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the air conditioning usage. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has established a provision in which the use of certain solar control glazing qualifies the OEMs for an off-cycle credit.

Beyond thin glazing, PGW is a market leader in glazing products that provide solar control, heated windshields without the use of wires, advanced on-glass antenna performance and hydrophobic technology among others.
