The role of Company Secretary has been strengthgened following the publication of a UK government-commissioned report on corporate governance.

The Higgs Report recommends strengthening the role of the Company Secretary of public company boards.

To ensure that Pilkington complies with the new guidelines, John McKenna will remain Company Secretary of Pilkington plc until July 2004, with the Group Secretarial function continuing to report to him. Clyde Leff continues in his role of Group General Counsel, with functional responsibility for legal affairs worldwide.
