Glazing for facades

Date: 26 November 2014

Hauser Plads is situated in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark. A public square, it is separated by the more popular and larger square, Kultorvet by the former Copenhagen Central Library Building.

Following a renovation in 2011, the Hauser Plads now comprises a landscaped playground and Copenhagen Municipality’s underground Cleaning Facilities Centre for the most part, marked distinctly by its glazing for facades.Hauser Plads was kick-started as a project to convert an underground parking facility into a new home for the City’s Cleaning Facility Center. The premises open to a sunken central courtyard which is so designed with glazing for facades that optimizes the influx of natural daylight. This courtyard is ensconced by a landscaped playground. Other amenities include offices, canteen, showers, changing rooms and parking spaces.

The principal architect was Karres en Brands Landschapsarchitecten, Polyform Arkitekter ApS. Collaborating with Saint-Gobain Glass, the architects ensured that the building’s glazing for facades stood a class apart. The design solutions included a glass built-up that consisted of a DGU curved with 2xSGG Stadip with Planitherm UN II coating. The suite of glass solutions also included SGG Climaplus Ultra II and SGG Contour.

The glazing for facades was judiciously selected for the individual benefits that each glass from the Saint-Gobain stable offered. SGG PLANITHERM ULTRA N is a high performance low-E coated glass, to be processed into an insulating glass unit. It offers up to three times more thermal insulation compared to a standard non low-E double glazing unit. SGG Stadip is a laminated safety and security glass that offers protection against injury, and was hence ideal for glazing in a public place like Hauser Plads that was frequented by children as well. SGG Climaplus Ultra is a thermally insulating glass with light transmission of 80% which ensures excellent daylight harvesting qualities. Hence it reduces costs incurred on artificial heating and lighting. SGG Contour, the curved glass, was also used to good effect in the double-glazed units.

The Hauser Plads is a fine example of how renovation can bring old structures alive, brimming with life and liveliness. The fact that a recreation centre for children and an office space can co-exist in one place, further testifies to how glazing for facades can help blend diverse spaces seamlessly…
