Toughened glass

Any information or knowledge of incidents of toughened glass spontaneously breaking.

The history of "spontaneous breakage" of toughened glass is extensive. With due regard for spontaneity, there is always a mechanical cause. As with other cause-of-failure analyses, the cause can be determined, if ALL of the fragments are preserved.

Common causes include:
Post-manufacture surface damage
Thermal history (improper heat treatment)
Nickel-sulfide inclusions
Improper installation (inadequate edge clearance, for example)
Improper edge finishing
