Safety Glass vs Tempered Glass

I have been told before that safety glass was tempered glass and vice versa. But recently someone told me that safety glass was different from tempered glass. Is this true? If so, what are the main differences between the two? Thank you in advance for your help.

I think it's really just a matter of semantics. Some people refer to tempered glass as safety glass, but I know in our industry, laminated glass is more commonly refered to as safety glass.

Both fully tempered and laminated glass are considered to be safety glass. HS and chemically strengthened glass are not safety glass in accordance with NA standards ANSI Z97 & CAN CGSB. Laminated glass, of course is the true safety glass in that it will generally stay in the opening after being impacted

Safety glass is including tempered glass and laminated glass. There's a kind of safety mirror as well that mirror has vinyl backing to make closet doors. The concept of making safe is the glass or mirror will not hurt people when it's broken.

From what I understand, fully tempered glass and PVB laminated glass are considered as "safety glass." But what about EVA, PU, or resin laminated glasses?

Tempered glass and laminated glass are both called "safety glass" in the UK

Other countries using differentlanguages may have more distinctive names for both products so there may not be a generic "safety glass" name covering both products

Laminated glass may be made using film or resin as the interlayer.

The first safety glass was resin laminated and it was invented over 100 years ago.

If you want to read about it send me an Email and I will send you the info on how it started

However tempered glass is not security glass.

Difference between tempered or laminated glass and tempered or laminated safety glass is human body impact test. Safety glass, tempered, laminated or
film backed, must pass impact test according to EN 12600 or in the US ANSI Z 97.1.

The major difference among Safety and tempered glass is this Safety glass is two pieces of glass caught together with an adhesive that keeps the glass in a single piece if it is broken.

It all comes down to the question of semantics. I have always thought that safety glass can be regarded as tempered ones but it may not be the same for people from other industries and they often mix laminated safety glass with tempered ones. I agree with Edward's definition. Thanks a bunch.

Tempered glass is one type of safety glass.

Actually, safety glass consists of tempered glass, laminated glass, tempered insulated glass, etc.

Many types. As long as the glass will do no harm to human beings, it can be called as safety glass.
