Thin-film solar module production: Fully automated inspection right after lamination - New inspection system optimizes line yield by early intervention

Date: 19 July 2010

The quality of the glass and the lamination process are decisive factors in thin-film solar module production. Selective off-line inspection with tests after production would not be sufficient for long-term product warranties of more than 20 years.

Additionally, to run a PV production facility 24/7 most effectively, in-line quality inspection right after the first process station, followed by inspection through the further finishing steps is required in a fully automated manufacturing line. By using these advanced optical quality inspection systems material defects can be identified as scrap before they are further processed. The results are optimized production, highest line yield and reduced production cost.

ISRA VISION has an installed base of systems for incoming glass inspection, coating inspection and scribing inspection. They are now complemented by a special setup to inspect thin-film solar modules right after lamination. The POWERSCAN optical in-line inspection system offers the new option to identify bubbles, shrinkage and inclusions. The user himself can decide which combination of inspection configurations can be used most effectively for his particular application. This results in higher product quality and more cost effective production.

Fully Automated In-line Inspection

POWERSCAN is a tool for 100% in-line surface inspection. The system can be integrated at various steps of a processing line. Thanks to the ISRA proprietary classification software the optical inspection runs automatically. Interfaces to production control systems permit continuous processing optimization. All operator menus are self- explanatory and intuitive. Thanks to theses features no special expert knowledge is necessary for operation.

Easy update for existing POWERSCAN systems

The modular product structure of ISRA inspection systems allows for an easy update or extension. The product portfolio offered covers the whole range of optical inspection tasks along the process chain of thin-film solar module production. The inspection solutions play a role in raising customer satisfaction as well as increasing a company’s ability to compete. They help to maximize quality, lowering operating costs and increase profitability.
