Society of Facade Engineers sets up regional headquarters in Dubai

Date: 30 March 2009

Dubai is now the regional headquarters for the regional chapter of the Society of Facade Engineers (SFE). "As a result of local pressure, we were asked to bring the society to Dubai early this month and have formed the regional chapter.

We have a number of applications now from people in the UAE for membership," said Chris Macey, Vice-Chairman, SFE.

The body was launched in the UK about three years ago by the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Institute of Structural Engineers and the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers. Today, SFE has 200 accredited members. We have been caught by the enormous enthusiasm from the marketplace for the need for SFE in the UAE.

That is a good thing because people recognise that we have many avante-garde buildings in Dubai. Ian Lord is the acting regional committee member. We will have an informal meeting to plan for future events this week," said Macey. "The applications are mainly in the UAE. We have been asked if we could launch the SFE in Bahrain. The society needs to be first successful in UAE before it spreads to other areas in the region. Otherwise, we are spreading ourselves too thinly."
