Sisecam Group makes largest Turkish investment in Romania - GlassCorp investment of Sisecam realized for € 65 million

Şişecam Group, one of the leading actors of the global glass sector, has opened GlassCorp automotive glass facility in Romania, due to Group’s sustainable growth target, with a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Mr.

Victor Ponta.  

Addressing the ceremony organized in production facility of Şişecam subsidiary GlassCorp in the province of Buzau, Prime Minister Ponta stated that they are impressed by strength of Şişecam Glass that realized an investment amounting to € 65 million and noted that one of the most important factors behind Romania’s development is automotive industry with its supply industry.

Şişecam Group Vice Chairman and CEO, Prof. Ahmet Kırman, noting GlassCorp plant equipped with the latest technology is the largest automotive glass manufacturer of Romania, said “This investment is one of the most important steps taken towards the development of automotive supply and glass industries in Romania, and will gain even further strength with the long-established, friendly and cooperative relations between Romania and Turkey.”

The second biggest manufacturer in Europe's glassware field, third biggest manufacturer in flat glass field and fourth biggest manufacturer in glass packaging field in terms of production capacity, Şişecam Group has completed a new automotive glass plant with an investment of € 65 million within the scope of GlassCorp S.A. company acquired in Romania in 2012.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of GlassCorp plant, which is the largest investment of Turkish capital in Romania, Romanian Prime Minister, Victor Ponta stated that he is impressed with the strength of Şişecam Group which realized an investment of € 65 million and he said one of the most important factors in Romania's development is automotive industry with its supply industry.

Pointing out in his speech that the group is a global actor in business lines including flat glass, glassware and glass packaging as well as soda and chrome compounds, Prof. Ahmet Kırman, Şişecam Group Vice Chairman and CEO, said, “Driving half of its sales income from international markets, our group has manufacturing operations in 13 countries across a vast geographical area ranging from Russia to Germany and from Egypt to India. We are a global group with our more than 20,000 employees, sales extending to almost 150 countries and sales revenue of more than $ 3.1 billion. We are on track to become one of the three largest global manufacturers in line with our vision for 2020.”

A Strategic Investment for Şişecam Group

Prof. Ahmet Kırman said that Şişecam is the 3rd largest manufacturer in Europe and the 6th largest manufacturer in the world in flat glass industry and continued to say, “Our sales revenue has reached $ 1 billion in flat glass thanks to our recent investments made in line with our organic and inorganic growth plans. Today we are proud to introduce everyone to one of our important investments in automotive glass, which is a strategic business line for Şişecam.”

“We focused on investment opportunities in Romania in 2012 not only because of our technological development and capacity increase requirements, but also our efforts towards expanding our reach. Romania left other alternatives behind because of its close proximity to Europe’s mature and developing markets, the power of its technological infrastructure, its qualified human resources and, above all, its investment incentive facilities,” said Kırman.

Largest automotive glass manufacture facility

Stating this modern facility, which is the largest automotive glass manufacturer of Romania with capacity of 800,000 tool sets/year of GlassCorp factory equipped with advanced technology, Kırman said, “We are also proud that we will be contributing to Buzau, and thus Romanian economy, with 300 new job opportunities besides our production and export activities. This investment is one of the most important steps taken towards the development of automotive supply and glass industries in Romania, and will gain even further strength with the long-established, friendly and cooperative relations between Romania and Turkey.”
