Bridgend County Borough Council has awarded waste management company, Biffa Waste Services Ltd, a six-year contract to provide the council’s household waste, trade waste, bulky waste and clinical waste collection services.

Bridgend County Borough Council is the first local authority in South Wales to contract out its waste collection services to the private sector.

Says Rhodri-Gwynn Jones, Director of Environment and Planning Services for the council: “Biffa was chosen out of four companies following a rigorous tender process that was based on both price and quality. Biffa has a lot of experience working in partnership with other local authorities from whom we have received excellent references.”

Cllr Jeff Jones, Leader of the Council says: “It is disappointing for our DSO team, however the council feels that Biffa’s tender presents the most attractive solution for our council tax payers and other users of the waste collection services.”

Biffa's Managing Director, Martin Bettington says: "We are obviously delighted to have been awarded this important contract and look forward to working in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council. Our aim is to provide a quality service, based on the highest levels of customer care, for the people of Bridgend County Borough."

The council employees who currently provide the services will transfer under TUPE. The contract is due to start in April and services will continue as normal.

Biffa is the UK's largest integrated waste management company and a part of the FTSE 100 environmental services group Severn Trent Plc.
