New White Paper Demonstrates Kopp’s Energy Efficient Heated Lens Solution for Exterior LED Lighting Applications

Date: 7 April 2014

For many critical exterior lighting applications, such as traffic signals or airport guidance, a consistent light output during adverse weather conditions is essential to ensuring safety.

Because Lighting Emitting Diodes (LEDs) emit very little heat, snow and ice build-up can become a dangerous problem.

As the adoption of LED technology across all sectors of the lighting industry continues to accelerate, one specific unintended consequence has been revealed: the possibility for snow and ice build-up on outdoor LED fixtures that prevents or alters light distribution patterns and reduces visibility. Recognizing the necessity to find an answer to this problem, Kopp, has engineered a heated lens solution that is capable of preventing and removing snow and ice from exterior LED lighting fixtures while maintaining optimal efficiency and functionality. Kopp’s direct heating method requires minimal energy to raise the temperature of the glass lens quickly and evenly. In the new technical white paper Kopp demonstrates the performance of the heated lens solution against Paragraph 2.13.1 in FAA Engineering Brief 67D.

The paper, titled “Heated Lens: An Efficient Solution for Snow and Ice Prevention on Exterior LED Lighting,” highlights the results of artic testing performed on glass lenses of varying size and form using the heated lens solution. These results demonstrate that Kopp’s heated lens solution can offer exterior lighting manufacturers a new and innovative option for eliminating the risk associated with the reduced heat output of LEDs.
