Off-Line Coating: Investing In Our Future

In the July issue of Glass Times, our senior research scientist, Monica Hughes, explained the importance of investing in the latest glazing technologies.    Here’s what she had to say…Over the last two years, we’ve been working hard to develop the next generation of glazing solutions.

We’ve done this by investing in our manufacturing capabilities at our Cowley Hill site.

In 2012 we unveiled our new state-of-the-art off-line coater. The £36 million coater  is our first jumbo off-line coater in the UK, and has allowed us to offer our customers an even greater range of advanced glazing products.

So, how does it work?

Magnetron off-line coating, or magnetron sputtering as it’s also referred to, is a process that works under vacuum by bombarding a target material on the glass surface, such as silver, with energetic ions to release particles of material.

The ejected material hits the surface of the glass and condenses to create an ultra-thin film or coating. Several layers of different materials are deposited in a continuous process to produce high performance coatings, which give the glass properties like low-emissivity or solar control.

Because our off-line coater is located close to our float line and on-line coating facility at Greengate, also in St Helens, we’re now able to produce advanced dual-coated products, which shortens lead times for our customers. For more information on these, click here.
