Bulgaria: Employer Asso Sides With Glass Maker In Dispute With Trade Unions

Date: 21 May 2007

The Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria (CEIBG), an organisation of local companies that collectively employ some 400,000 workers, has issued a declaration siding with Trakia Glass Bulgaria, the local unit of Turkish glass and chemicals group Turkey Sise ve Cam Fabrikalari (Sisecam), in its pay rise dispute with the trade unions.

After failing to hammer out any agreement with the management of the Targovishte glass plant, the trade unions declared a strike on Saturday with demands for an increase in night shift wages and for adjustment in the company minimum wages in accordance with the recent corrections to the nationwide minimum monthly pay.

The production cycle has not been disrupted as 35% the equipment is manned by the technologically required minimum of 35% of the workforce.

Trakia Glass Bulgaria, a CEIBG member, has been under union pressure for a double pay rise since the beginning of 2007. 'These demands are groundless given the collective labor agreement signed by the concerned parties in August 2006 which took effect retroactively from May 1, 2006,' said the CEIBG declaration.
