Larger format sets new standards for high resolution image transfer in X-ray, commercial and display applications Mainz/Germany, March 23, 2010 - SCHOTT has developed an X-large format fiber optic faceplate for digital X-ray applications that enables high resolution imaging of areas of 430 mm x 430 mm and larger.

The new fiber optic material not only allows for manufacturing in larger dimensions but also excellent resolution and high X-ray attenuation.

The CCDs and CMOS detectors that capture high resolution detailed images, thanks to a very fine pixel structure, form the heart of state-of-the-art medical imaging devices.
As these sensors have grown larger and more powerful, faceplate sizes evolved to match the required cassette sizes, such as 430 mm x 430 mm (17” x 17”). β€œThe new fiber optic faceplate glass brings added flexibility to the design of medical imaging equipment,” notes Dave Filkins, New Products Manager of SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging Division.

In response to the growing demand for higher resolution and higher contrast digital images, SCHOTT has also increased the size of its industry-standard fiber optic material that is already used in many medical and dental radiography devices.

The X-large format faceplate material is a stable glass fiber optic component that performs a variety of different functions in digital x-ray systems: for instance, as a substrate onto which scintillating coatings are deposited, or as a light guide that couples the screen onto the photosensitive device, a CCD or CMOS detector, for example. Fiber optic components from SCHOTT efficiently collect the visible light and transmit it with superior resolution of fine details and improved image contrast. The x-ray absorption properties of the fiber optic plates protect the photo detectors from damage and prevent extraneous noise from compromising the images.

SCHOTT faceplates are available in a variety of sizes and shapes of 4 microns in diameter to 25 microns or larger.
