COM, December 12, 2011 ) Morris, ILL - Quality Glass Block and Window Company has been working with architects on school and government projects to help conserve energy with innovative glass block solar wall tubes from Pittsburgh Corning. With a .21 U-value and an R-value over 4.75, architects see the energy saving value.
“The aesthetics and light transmission have always been a major factor in incorporating glass blocks into architectural projects,” said Ray Tuminello, president of Quality Glass Block and Window Company. “The solar wall tubes also add to the LEED ratings of the project, and for these reasons we have seen a substantial increase in architectural interest.”
To meet the requirements of varying wall thicknesses, glass block solar wall tubes are made in different depths. The widths are 8 and 16 inches wide, depending on the light transmission needed for the project. Surrounded by a metal tube and with the use of a lentil, the glass blocks within are protected from any load bearing stress due to structural settling. Made with the superior quality that architects rely on from Pittsburgh Corning, the solar wall tubes can be custom made with any combination of Pittsburgh Corning Glass Blocks, even the solid glass block, Vistabrik.
These glass block solar wall tubes have been incorporated into the Gompers Elementary School District project in Joliet, Illinois this past summer. Healy Bender and Associates was the architectural firm responsible for incorporating the solar wall tubes. George Sollitt Construction Company was contracted to oversee the project. The Fort Hamilton Gebhart Center in Cincinnati is also benefitting from the use of the glass block solar wall tubes.
“We are currently working with other architects to incorporate glass block designs into projects, and we are always looking to educate others on the benefits of solar wall tubes” Ray Tuminello said.
